However, one of my Israeli friends is from a kibbutz that is set up much in the way of a communist society.

I think the key features of kibbutz vs. Marxist ideas is that kibbutz is small, voluntary, and the membership is controlled, kind of like a country/social/private/exclusive club (meaning members can be kicked out, new members need approval to join).

Going beyond the country club scope is where the idea fails, when an attempt is made to make it large and compulsory.
