Definitely food for thought. And the free (including ad-free) use of the site and all its premium features is an idea we've been kicking around. Might be about time to give it a try. The money we'd give up in ad revenue is a pittance. Really.

On the positive side of the ledger, I did just implement a feature I think is pretty cool (users can now configure their own screen colors, fonts, etc), and managed to get a measurable 20% speed increase while I was at it.

One of the benefits of being stuck on a modem is that speed tweaks are very meaningful to me immediately. I used a friend's cable connection last week and couldn't believe how fast things were.

If I had broadband, I might get lazy about efficiency, which let's a ton of tiny inefficiencies add up to major slowness when the site grows to a substantial size. The way it is now, I make endless tweaks to get snappy performance through my modem, and a side benefit is that the speed doesn't go away if there are hundreds of thousands of users.
