Dan, Re: My estimate is that, including Xbox sales, Intel unit sales were solidly down for Q1.

Why guessing when you can get the numbers straight from the horse's mouth:

intel.com

** Intel Architecture microprocessor unit shipments were approximately flat sequentially, including shipments for the Microsoft* Xbox*.

And what about microprocessor unit sales without Xbox units?

jc-news.com

<Eric> Hi, thanks. Paul, can you give an idea what the processor units would have been excluding the X Box sales on quarter to quarter and Andy, can you give some finer granularity on the efficiencies that you have been achieving in the fabs that led to these better than expected gross margins?

<Paul> Without X Box, the volume would have been down a little bit, but better than we expected.

So let's summarize: Overall CPU unit sales were flat. Overall ASPs were up. Without Xbox CPU unit sales were down. ASPs for Xbox CPUs are probably fixed. That means: Xbox sales were up and Non-Xbox ASPs were also up. That's not too surprising since P4 ASPs got a solid lift in early Q1 with the introduction of the 2.2 GHz Northwood.

What can we expect this quarter? Since Xbox sales are very slow in Europe and Japan and demand has cooled down somewhat in the US we can expect Xbox unit sales to be flat at best (probably down). That will help overall ASPs but will probably also mean that overall units will be down. That's of course assuming a seasonal Q2.

Dan, re: "so 3 to 4 of that 34 million number was game console parts."

I believe your Xbox CPU numbers are too high:

"Microsoft's announcement that it expected to ship 3.5 million to 4 million Xboxes by the end of June, down from its initial view of 4.5 million to 6 million units..."

Looking forward it looks like a rate of about 1.5M/qtr:

"Microsoft also aimed to have 9 million to 11 million units installed by the end of June 2003, Connors told analysts and reporters in a conference call."

Dan, Re: "Intel unit sales were solidly down for Q1" and "indicates that P4 ASPs are probably lower than those of the PIII parts they're replacing"

Doesn't make any sense. Revenues were flat with last quarter, which means that if ASPs or volumes are down, then the other one of the two is up. You are trying to suggest that both ASPs and volumes were down for Intel, but if so, then revenues wouldn't be constant.

In other words, you can't have it both ways.

Re: "I think you're ignoring the impact of game console sales."

X-Box CPUs were *not* part of the 34M number.

Intel grabbed an 80.6% share of the PC market compared with AMD's 18.5% share, he said. If Intel processor sales for X-Box are included in the tally, Intel's market share was 81.2%, compared to 18% for AMD, he told EBN.

Looking at this quote, we can find out the total available market, and subtract AMD's volumes (VIA and others were said to have sold about 300k in Q4). Without X-Box, AMD had 18.5% of the market with 7.8M CPUs. The total market, therefore was 42.2M. Subtracting 7.8M AMD volumes and .3M from others, that puts Intel's volumes at 34M (Intel later confirmed this number in another news source).

With X-Box included, the total market was 43.3M, so X-Box CPU sales were about 1.1M for the quarter.
