SEOUL, April 22 Asia Pulse -

Exports of information technology (IT) related products grew by 4.7 percent year-on-year to US$3.83 billion in March, according to the Ministry of Information and Communication.
The ministry said the figures account for 95.2 percent of the $US1.43 billion trade surplus reported for March.

IT imports fell off by 6.6 percent in the same period to $US2.45 billion, as locally-made products replaced those that were brought in from abroad.

Leading the surge were sales of cellular phones, while the increased prices for liquid crystal displays (LCDs) in foreign markets helped push the IT sector into the black. Cell phones sales were up 29.6 percent compared to March 2001.

Telecommunications equipment, including wireless phones topped $US2.68 billion.
