Microsoft Corp founder Bill Gates is scheduled to testify in defense of the company at the remedy hearing before US District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly, a company spokesman said.

"Bill Gates is glad to have the opportunity to testify in the remedy proceedings," to address the "critical role" Microsoft and other computer manufacturers have played in making computing accessible to consumers and "technology an engine for economic growth," Jim Desler said in a statement.

Gates is to lead off the second week of witnesses called by the company, which followed four weeks of testimony from witnesses called by the nine states and the District of Columbia who are suing the company.

Late last year, Microsoft and the Justice Department reached a settlement in their long-running antitrust dispute.

Kollar-Kotelly must approve that settlement, but a coalition of attorneys general from around the country are pushing her to throw it out in favor of a stricter remedy.
