TOKYO (Reuters) - Tokyo stocks put on healthy gains by midday on Monday, with NEC Corp and other core high-tech shares snapped up amid growing investor hopes their profits will stage a big recovery this business year.

Bellwether tech issues reporting 2001/02 results and forecasts for the year to March 2003 towards the end of this week include NEC, Sony Corp <6758> and Toshiba Corp <6502>.

PC and chipmaker NEC, the morning's most heavily traded issue by value, jumped 3.5 percent to 1,035 yen after business daily Nihon Keizai Shimbun said at the weekend the firm sees a group operating profit of about 75 billion yen for the year to next March after an estimated loss of 57 billion last year.

"The profit numbers in the report on NEC actually look a bit low. They nonetheless helped focus market attention on prospects for a profit rebound this fiscal year," said Masatoshi Sato, senior strategist at Mizuho Investors Securities.

"And investors are factoring that recovery scenario into share prices before earnings results later in the week."
