Yes, originally a "sparky." In fact, when I was a kid I dreamed of making a million volt Tesla coil. It was the mechanical parts that tripped me up -- getting a mechanical magnetic oscillator to make and break the primary, made of pieces of steel cut from tin cans, etc. When I finally got that working I found that the layers of the secondary coil were self-shorting to eachother because I didn't use the recommended "parafin paper." They didn't have that at Radio Shack or Layayette Electronics.

When I visited Germany at age 10 there was a museum in Munich that had a huge Tesla coil that filled a large room and generated 20' sparks.
