the good in our society outweighs the bad by many times over.

Even though it's a society where lots of people enjoy anal sex without the slightest shred of shame?

My complaint about X (in this context only) is what I see as her proclivity to publish her views about what is wrong with our society, with little balance concerning what is right about it. Indeed, this is not even a "balance,"
But it is a balance, don't you see? She's balancing out your dreamy, rosy presentation. Absent your observations, there would have been no call for her counterpoint.

Dithers, you and I are the same age and, if I'm not mistaken, you were raised in the Catholic Church. That's my inference from what you've said. I remember being a kid with a father who was a scratch golfer but couldn't join any of the country clubs around. He used to caddy so he could play the courses on caddy day. And he couldn't join because he was Catholic. My best friend growing up was Jewish. It was worse for her family. Don't you remember any of that? Maybe "hate" is too strong a word for it, or maybe not, but it sure wasn't pretty. But for the civil rights movement and the arrival of "others" more off-putting than Catholics, my blond-haired, blue-eyed self might still be on the outside looking in. I still have a lot of appreciation for how it feels on the outside. What about you?

"I would opine that an Alien from outer space stumbling across X's posts, would be given the clear impression that our nation is one composed of a hate-filled populace"

So my sense that you had an alien perspective seems to have been validated. It probably has everything to do with the lack of air, which must attend your vantage point...<g>
