Good but difficult questions, Bill.

On the first, when I've read talk of a comprehensive solution that involved troops from some third party, who those troops were and what their role would be was assumed to emerge as a part of the negotiating process and their presence would be legitimated by it. As to how much protection that would provide, I have no idea.

On the second question, the education system, if the negotiated settlement were to produce a genuine Palestinian state, its education system, I assume, would not be under Israeli control. I recognize the concern but to place an education system under outside control is to make it, at best worthless, but most likely it would generate a parallel underground system which would prove to be worse.

Not easy answers. But then that's the nature of this conflict. Many, many steps to go.

"border police between the two sides?" An Israeli friend came up with an idea of building schools on the border between Israel and the Palestinians and make it a requirement that Palestinian and Israeli kids go to the same schools and share the same education system. Anyone see Promises, there's an interesting scene where and Orthodox kid named Shlomo encounters an unnamed Arab kid in old Jerusalem, they could have begun to fight, instead they ended up having a burping match, smiling and laughing.

Who does the thread really feel can bear the burden of being the border police between the two sides?

Maybe Russian soldiers would work out best.
