doubly pissed, perhaps; a little more fearful, unclear. the problem with the Gerecht hypothesis is that it only works when you really turn up the juice, and the Israelis (thank god) don't really have it in them to do that (or are restrained from doing so by various factors including us). So I'd bet that all they've achieved is to temporarily suppress the immediate threat while creating more headaches for themselves, and us, down the road.

If the Arabs think the administration was just playacting, meanwhile, the Israelis have probably taken from this that they can rely on Congress, the Republican right, and the administration's hawks to protect them from the nasties at State. So basically, the last few weeks have probably ended up accomplishing little and undermining respect everywhere for both Powell and his boss.

should be an interesting next few months...
