POWs are entitled to food, clothing and shelter, and oddly enough, tobacco.

Carl, It's probably empirical, and not formally expressed, but tobacco seems to have anti depressant effects and a smoker can dose himself exquisitely. Undepressed prisoners are easier to deal with.

Thanks for the informative answer and links. I guess the data coming out of Jenin was carefully reviewed by the Israeli authorities to show that Israel exceeded these rules with an appropriate response. The bulldozers were used as a last resort. Terrible to consign to your troops an obvious case that lots of casualties are on the way.

Of course those are the rules and guidance. Sometimes the data is not precise and an estimate has to be made.

Still it's a good idea to have a definition of expected behavior in these violent situations. Persistent rule breakers can usually be highlighted in investigations.

I suppose I should feel for the Palestinians. Sorry, but I do not feel violence is an appropriate response from them in the situation they are in. They glorify violence and are unimaginative in other forms of protest. The battle in Jenin was inevitable and the Israelis handled it well. They won imho. Wish things had turned out better for both sides of course.
