I think it is very wrong to dismiss the past contributions of Islamic thinkers. There was a period, which you are pointing to, where the best new ideas came from the East not from Europe. The problem is that then, Islam looked forward, explored new ideas, and was the among the most progressive societies. Today, it looks back, shuns education (other than the Koran, which it probably mis-teaches), and looks back. Today the societies of Islam are among the most regressive. Therefore you end up with no Nobel prize, no real modern thought, no economic activity, envy, hatred, etc.
