AsI said, where homosexuality is incorporated into a culture it has served psychological, sociological, and spiritual purposes. The myth of Ganymede as lover of Zeus was created to validate the natural homosexuality which was a large part of Greek culture.

In cultures which have accepted homosexuality as a gift rather than as a curse, the community have benefitted by the contrary and unique perspectives and insights which were generated by those who embodied and represented that variance. A loose analogy might be the jester/advisor of medieval times.

Not only that, but you get a decent haircut.

It is possible the gene that codes for homosexuality is linked to other valuable behaviors. It is too bad we are not really "allowed" to study genetic differences in humans, but then again, considering the attitudes some people would bring to the studies, perhaps it is better we do not.

I'm struggling to think of a way in which the world is better off that some of its human inhabitants prefer their own gender as sex partners.

An hypothesis: There may have been an advantage in our harsh ancestral environment to the survival of family genes where one member's contributions of work, food, other survival benefits went to the nurturance of the children of siblings. Like having an assistant teacher in the classroom makes possible better learning for that class. The genetic logic for that individual is that his DNA is carried on in his nieces and nephews. Families whose genetic code spawned the occasional assistant might have found themselves ahead, when winter set it, in survival-probability, of their completely hetero neighbors, so that that family's children, in which there lies a latent gay gene, grow up to reproduce, including reproducing the occasional gay uncle or aunt.

The gay uncle probably made the cave all cozy and attractive and painted neat animals on the walls to keep everyone's spirits up. Maybe he sang show tunes around the fire, and said witty things, too, and since laughing is good for the immune system of all his siblings' children....
