Yeah, but Northwood seems to have recovered 5-10% of that. I would expect the next generation (Prescott) to give another 10% or more, even without the benefit of enhanced Hyperthreading. By the time Hammer ramps, I doubt it will have a 75% IPC advantage over the current Pentium at the time (and besides, 25% * 30% = 62.5% improvement, not 75%).

The question is whether Hammer really will get a significant improvement on frequency. Jerry only promising 2GHz for launch is not very convincing.

A 25% improvement in IPC is worth a lot more than 25% improvement in clock speed. A 2.4 GHz P4 only runs 10% faster than a 2 GHz P4. Therefore a 25% boost in IPC is worth about 50% in clock speed.
