"Understanding", if deployed in a way that makes the actions appear more sympathetic, is, indeed, a way of mitigating, if not exonerating, actions. There is, of course, such a thing as understanding that does not do that.......

I'm getting more and more cranky about that. I'm tired of having to add a little something about how I'm not excusing every time I say I understand something suboptimal lest someone gets the wrong idea. They're two entirely different words and two entirely different concepts, for heaven's sake. And when did trying to understand become a bad thing?
