In fact, I would think most Palestinians as well as most Israelis favor a compromise settlement leading, possibly, towards a unified, secular country but the truth is that it's the fanatics and extremists on both sides who are calling the shots. Don't forget that Rabin was murdered by a right-wing Israeli extremist because it was hinted that he was ready to give back "occupied" land for peace. The right-wing Israelis say they will not give back one inch of "occupied" land because, according to the Bible, it's theirs. Indeed, like those in Northern Ireland, those in the MidEast are religious as and when it suits their political purpose. I'm sure that nowhere in any bible are acts of terrorism condoned. So it is not surprising that the Koran says that Muslims should not murder innocents in the furtherance of their aims, yet everyone refers to Muslim religious fanatics when describing the terrorist acts of Hamas, Islamic Jihad, Al Qaeda etc. They are not religious fanatics any more than the right-wing Israelis are. I don't know if you are aware that the truly serious Jewish adherents are totally opposed to the state of Israel and regard Zionism as a curse. netureikarta.org (Perhaps this picture of religious Jews burning the Israeli flag will convey this attitude more forcibly. netureikarta.org Yet the Israelis, most of whom are quite irreligious, consider that anyone who criticises their actions or policies is "Anti-Semitic". What I find unacceptable and, indeed, ironic is that Israel justifies its Nazi-like actions on the Palestinians by making reference to the suffering of the Jews in the Holocaust. As a South African, I know personally what can be achieved politically through negotiation and compromise. But, SA is, of course, a secular state and, fortunately, fanatics whether racial, religious, whatever, are in the minority. Nevertheless, and notwithstanding the complexity of the issues, I believe that the US, whether it likes to or not, is the only nation/agency that is capable of making and enforcing a settlement. It should at least make the effort to do so.
