taking the ha'aretz arguement to its illogical conclusion one should just do away with the state of Israel and kill all its Jewish citizens.

while the occupation has something to do with the current economic picture, let's face it, the drop in tourism is related to terror not occupation. the drop in the dot.com or high tech sectors has nothing what so ever to do with occupation.

only factor that can be attributed to occupation is military spending and some extra 'infrastructure' costs, but terror once again is the major factor driving those costs.

another outcome for this arguement is that perhaps israel should respond to the next terror incident by just blowing up any areas suspected of harboring terrorism from the air.

then tourism can come back, and because israel will have shown the way to defeat terror, the world economies will all blossom and everyone (except the Palestinians) will live happily ever after. The end. Good night children, sleep tight.

This Ha'aretz Editorial Makes Too Much Sense...

Yep, I've been curious about the economic effects on Israeli society. It seems to me there are three factors: the costs of occupation, the increased military costs (more troops, replace weapons, etc.), and lowered tax revenues. By the way, does anyone have any idea how large a proportion of Israel's GDP is from tourist dollars?

How do these economic matters play into the defense calculus? And, given the widespread criticism of Sharon that he has no plan beyond the recent West Bank incursions, how will they handle the economics?
