re: Carphone Warehouse About Faces on Nokia 8210

>> UK Retailer About Faces on Nokia Ban

24-Apr-2002
Cellular News

The UK's largest cellphone retailer, The Carphone Warehouse which last week said it was suspending the sale of the Nokia 8210 after it said the handset had suffered repeated faults, has now said that it is to restart selling the handset.

In a short statement, the company said:

"The Carphone Warehouse has resumed selling Nokia 8210s with effect from Saturday 20th April 2002. The recent issue with the product has now been resolved."

The company still has not said what the problem was and the suspension of sales appears to have lasted just one day. Either the actions last week were a bluff by the Carphone Warehouse to force Nokia's hand in resolving the problems, or there were outstanding problems, and the publicity generated encouraged Nokia to resolve the issue rapidly. We understand that the handset is no longer being made anyway, having come to the end of its life cycle. <<

Eric,

China Mobile could be the do-or-die market for GPRS. They are big, they are prepared, they are pressured by Unicom, they have World Cup promo opportunity .......

They even have handsets available. However, take a look at these handsets. Nokia is going to have a tough time. Those MOTs are very hot looking.

Ref: May 17 GPRS launch in China. Get serious! China mobile has stated within the last month that this GPRS POS system suffers from multiple problems. I say they turn on their test network and give a couple of Hip Hip Hooray's. Then the government who owns or controls telecom in China picks technology based on what is best for China -- and guess what. They aren't going to charge ahead with this GPRS brain cooker system.

They are going to visit the World Cup finals in Korea and Japan and see what 1X RTT and 1X EVDO can do compared to GPRS. It's not going to be a pretty comparison <gggg>
