If you own a house, how often do you check to see what neighboring houses are selling for? Most houses are held for a few years up to a few decades, but I don't know anyone who can't tell you what their latest tax appraisal was and what other houses in the neighborhood are selling for.

I can see paying no attention to a LTBH in investment-grade bonds, CDs or similar instruments.

Anything more volatile has to be reviewed periodically to make sure the investment rationale still makes sense. Otherwise you are gambling with your money through sheer inattention (ask all those folks who owned "safe stocks" like T or the big-name mutual funds that tanked the last few years).
