Sending an SMS msg is one thing. It takes a few seconds to do and makes the network a lot of money compared to the bandwidth used. About $0.15 for every 160 text characters.

GPRS or WAP however are a different story. Just about everyone I know has a WAP phone, many GPRS, and almost noone uses it. Who wants to register for the services, navigate with a tiny screen and keypad that only fits a few lines of text, and then wait to get a few words of info?

I use it for quotes sometimes when I am trading and away from the PC but it takes about 10 clicks and 60 seconds to find what I want. Most people, for most online info, will wait till they can use a PC from either work or home.

The ability to stick the SIM card in a PC Card for outdoors laptop access is useful sometimes, but again only for trading. And then it is slow for anything but a small amount of data. The one off quote, the occasional important email. But again, there is almost always a nearby PC with a much faster connection available.

I think web access is more analogous to TV than to voice services. It requires attention and being bodily stationary. Handheld TVs have been around for Donkey's years and are pretty cheap. But how many people do you know that own one?
