Interesting to note, though, that R&D spending correlates better to stock market performance than just abourt anything else. The greater the percent of R&D (as a percent of revenues) the better the subsequent stock market performance.

Throwing money in R&D doesn't guarantee results but in this case maybe it did as Intel is clearly ahead in process technology.

Look at it the other way, NOT throwing money into R&D is a guaranteed way to not get results. Right off the top, I think that AMD spends a disproportionately high amount on chip design, and a disproportionately low amount on process engineering, vs. Intel. Just a seat of the pants opinion, with little research done right now.
