Clappy -- Yours is probably the most thoughtful and courageous post I have ever seen.

You aren't knocking religion -- you are identifying some human frailities.

Man has come close to ruining religion. When we listen to those outside ourselves, we are setting ourselves up for failure. Religion has become the equivalent of style to many people. "If you don't wear the clothes I wear and cut your hair the same way, you are no good (going to hell)." Some people use it to separate us from one another, rather than to bring us together.

The intents of most religions seem good. They served a secular societal need at one point, when they were the primary means of controlling large groups and fostering harmony. Now they seem to be creating the opposite of what was intended, at least when people begin comparing them to other religions and judging other people based on their beliefs.

I think, for the most part, the religions are good. Sure, some of them are a few thousand years behind on such issues as whether men are equal to women, but they have a lot of it right. We are screwing up their interpretations.

Would we be better off without them? I dunno. Maybe we need them more than ever. But I sure would like to get the zealots in ALL religions off their high horses. AND THEY KNOW WHO THEY ARE. (HINT TO THEM: This post and clappy's post will upset them.)

"As if it wasn't bad enough that all of Islam hates them, now there are going to be a lot of upset Christians."

All of Islam doesn't hate the Palestinains......... and I'm sure many of the Christian faith will not blame the Palestinians for the fire started by the Palestinians too.... IF indeed they started the fire........

No doubt both sides will blame the other side for starting the fire, but like the alleged massacre in Jenin...... reports from the Palestinian Authority themselves clearly indicate there was no such massacre..... once again the Palesitnians used lies & deceit to manipulate global perception........ and since liars & manipulators will do & say just about anything to gain the upper hand, I'll assume the Palestinians started the fire at the church........... no doubt Israel had no need to bring more wrath of global opinion since they already had the compound surrounded & the terrorists inside where going nowhere but to jail..... however, the Palestinian terrorists had everything to lose & no chance of escape.

You assume too much........ when too little evidence exists to support the assumption.

The rest of your post seems to naively forget that history is replete with genocide, massacres & unspeakable attrocities in the name of (insert your supreme being's name here). No doubt God (or whatever supreme being one chooses to belive or not believe in) often weeps at how cruel, manipulative & exploitive man can be in his quest to be right or to have dominion over others. Sooner or later he will decide it's time for a change..... as history shows mere mortals repeat themselves in abusing the name of (insert your supreme being's name here) to be right or hold dominion over others.
