7:13AM Barrick Gold's Q1 earnings fall, miss ests. (ABX, CA:ABX) by Tomi Kilgore
Barrick Gold (ABX) (CA:ABX) reported first-quarter earnings that fell from year-earlier levels and missed consensus analysts expectations, as a decline in production and reduced revenue offset a rise in the average selling price of gold per ounce. For the full year, the gold miner expects exploration and development expenses to increase, leading to earnings per share of 42 to 47 cents, while analysts surveyed by Thomson Financial/First Call had been expecting EPS of 53 cents. The stock closed Tuesday down 28 cents at $20.07.


6:53AM Plug Power reports narrowing Q1 losses (PLUG) by Tomi Kilgore
Plug Power (PLUG) reported first-quarter net losses that were narrower than the same period last year and consensus analyst expectations and revenue that more than doubled. Net cash spending declined 53 percent, and is expected to decline 19 percent for the year. Shares of the developer of power generation systems closed Tuesday up 28 cents at $10.46.




6:29AM Host Marriot tops Q1 FFO expectations (HMT) by Tomi Kilgore
Host Marriot (HMT) reported first quarter funds from operations (FFO) that fell from year-earlier levels but exceeded expectations as the travel and leisure industry continued to improve, supported by a strengthening economy. Meanwhile, the hotel real estate investment trust recorded a net loss for the quarter, versus a profit in the year-earlier period, amid a 9.5 percent decline in revenue. Looking ahead, the company is forecasting FFO of $1.12 to $1.22 a share, surrounding the consensus analyst forecast compiled by Multex of $1.16 a share. The stock closed Tuesday up 9 cents at $11.91.
