how Nokia attempts to compete with QCOM chips with Snaptrack

Does NOK even have a GPS solution for CDMA phones?

It seems to me that the market for basic voice only 1X phones will be quite large. The main driver will be the carriers, who will benefit from the expanded network capacity (without which there would be no reason to upgrade from now very inexpensive IS-95). My guess is that Leap will be a big initial customer.

The market could end up being pretty big....but only for a handset that supports 800MHz as well as 1900MHz. Leap (and the other flat-rate providers) dont provide a market nearly large enough to support development of 1900MHz only handsets. Unless Sprint PCS starts selling Nokia's, this is going to be a tiny seller.

I have no idea what Nokia is thinking.

==========

True.

But my point was that NOK's 1x product has been rejected:

In Australia:

Nokia phone fails Telstra CDMA test
Message 17323473

Nokia's Australian CDMA handset continues to flop
Message 17335273

Analysts have also noted that VZ is backing away from NOK, and NOK's 1x offering announcements have been 1900MHz - of little use to VZ.

US carriers haven't approved NOK 1x designs, and analysts expect Q ASICs to gain share this year...

Unsubstantiated rumors have NOK still working on voice only - much less mastering data.

This is why I wonder - along with this Mexico 95A release - if NOK is trying to (having to) focus on markets outside of the US, where 1x will be mandatory with major carriers...
