It's not a new day -- it's simply an acquisition of a weaker competitor by a stronger competitor. HP did not need CPQ -- your excitement over product announcements that you thought were "new" that have actually been going on continually shows that. If it was really a merger of equals, they would have done something like Burroughs and Sperry Rand did and come up with a new name. The best (and only?) hope for the combined company would be for the CPQ employees to recognize that they've been acquired and to try to fit into the HP culture as quickly as possible. Trying to retain the CPQ culture and ideologies will simply result in more conflict and a loss of productivity for the overall organization (as an employee in silicon valley for 20 years, and a consultant to numerous high-tech companies for the last 10 of those, I've seen this happen many, many times). There were no new threads started when HP acquired Verifone or Apollo. I doubt you guys started new threads when CPQ acquired Tandem or DEC. Personally, I believe HP is going to choke on this acquisition, just as CPQ choked on Tandem/DEC. I don't think the CPQ people are going to want to be assimilated, and that's going to cause numerous problems down the road. But I hope I'm wrong (coming from someone who's wife works for HP and who has a significant amount of funds tied up in HP stock, though much less now %-wise than it used to be). It's not a fresh start. It's an acquisition. Welcome to the HP family, and please join us on the HP thread. I believe that we can continue to use the old thread so that the history of the thread is preserved. You guys have an excellent point about the quote -- I'll send a message to the originator of the thread and see if it can be changed. I know some of the information can, at least. Dave
