Dave,

I think you got it backwards, it's HWP that needed CPQ just like it was Compaq that needed the merger with DEC to move onto the "greener pastures"... It just took longer than expected to get there. And merging with HWP will only slow it down further. Compaq HAS BEEN READY for the new mean post Internet and dotcom bubbles World.

And welcome to the HQP thread, don't be shy to drop by here, Dave

:^)

Piotr

Dear Dave: The old HWP thread does not have to be posted to for it to remain. As long as you or someone has it bookmarked, it's still there. I have a few corporations bookmarked that no longer exist due to mergers or buy-out. When it's relevant, I go there for old news or other postings.

Per your comment: "There were no new threads started when HP acquired Verifone or Apollo. I doubt you guys started new threads when CPQ acquired Tandem or DEC."

Right. But HWP didn't change it's stock symbol nor did CPQ change their's when these companies were acquired. CPQ merged with HWP = HPQ.

People at SI are free to post where they want or do not want. If you elect to stay at the old HWP thread, that's your own business, that's fine.

Regards,

Lynn

I believe time will reveal that this merger is a classic "Takeunder", a smaller firm really buys the larger firm.

Although, if measure by heritage, this may not be true, it seems that hwp people are getting the majority of the divisions, but if you measure by culture...

...well, need I say more?? :))

Gotta disagree.
HWP was choking without CPQ, and CPQ was turning things around in a tough environment. CPQ didn't need HWP, rather than the reverse. CPQ has several lines that it beats HWP in, and HWP needed those lines to make a more coherent strategy. The alternative was to sell off some pieces (as WW wanted) and focus on a few profitable (but dying) product lines.
CPQ probably needed to do a bit of that, too...but not nearly as much.
