Rick Perry heralded the age of wind energy while speaking at the dedication of one of the world’s largest wind power projects Friday. “West Texas is helping to give the rest of Texas clean air,” Perry said. “This is clean burning energy. It would take 86,000 barrels of oil to produce as much energy as this project.” In the backyard of one of the largest oilfields in history, Perry paid homage to Iraan’s Yates field. “I was glad to come through the Yates field,” Perry said. “But that’s the past. We want to keep our oil and gas industries invigorated and prosperous, but wind energy is the future.” With 107 triple-blade windmills towering 213 feet tall in the background, Perry spoke briefly to about 400 people at the Desert Sky Wind Farm. The project is in Pecos County, about 45 miles east of Fort Stockton. Perry declared the operation of windmills for electricity “a piece of Texas history.” The wind farm will provide energy for 55,000 households in San Antonio through City Public Service, the electric provider for San Antonio. Desert Sky Wind Farm, formerly Clear Sky Wind Farm is owned by American Electric Power it was purchased from Enron Wind in December 2000 for $175 million. The project was developed, constructed and is operated by Enron Wind, which will soon become General Electric Wind, said Bob Gates, Enron Wind’s senior vice president. Although Fort Stockton’s Alamo Elementary third-graders sang the national anthem, the highlight of the afternoon event was Fort Stockton ‘s County Judge Delmon Hodges. “We used to love these mesas out here,” Hodges said. “But we love ’em a whole lot more now that they’re bringing in money.” Hodges was asked to introduce Perry, “Well, you can tell it’s an election year when you see this many public officials in one place.” Hodges continued, “We really like Gov. Perry out here, even though he went to (Texas) A&M.” Other officials included Texas Sen. Frank Madla (D-Alpine), Rep. Pete Gallego (D-Alpine) and Assistant Secretary of Energy David Garman. cleanenergyinvestor.com Odd that Bush isn't bragging about this large wind project in his home state. But that would offend his oil buddies, wouldn't it? Del
