You obviously don't have the experience to know that Dell don't even make the Dell-branded laptops. They are made by Compal in Taiwan and are generally of fair to middling quality.

On the other hand Dell does make their own Desktops/Workstations/Servers, if you allow that almost all of the parts are from other brand-name makers and that Dell is and always has been the assembler of choice.

I just this week took delivery of the higher-end Dell Dimension 8200 and the entire transaction was a joy. The *only* point of contention was that I moved my USB hub from my ThinkPad to the 8200 and it occasionally lost the connected devices. It turns out that all I needed to do was turn the hub to bus-powered mode from externally-powered mode.

The point of this post is mainly to suggest that Dell will *always* win in the market that it defined and that HPQ is doomed to die a horrible death in this particular space.

p.s. one final thing MeDroogies. The 8200 came with a Conexant modem. I finally own an item made by Conexant! Pity it will never be used.
