USD Comforted By Productivity But Worn Down By Fed Inaction by Stacey Yang

The dollar maintained its slim gains across-the-board to rise from its multi-month lows against the major currencies, underpinned by stronger-than-expected US productivity data and by short-covering after markets in Tokyo and London re-opened. Nevertheless, investors became skittish on news of a plane crash and turned to the safe-haven currencies. Moreover, the Federal Reserve's decision to leave rates unchanged served to slightly undermine the dollar so that it closed down fractionally from its opening levels.

The greenback found reason to cheer on the morning's release of US Productivity that soared above forecasts to 8.6% in the preliminary Q1 reading from the previous revised 5.5%, thereby marking its largest gain since Q2 1983. US Unit Labor Costs slid more-than-expected to -5.4% in preliminary Q1 versus the previous revised -3.1%, also posting its biggest decline since Q2 1983. US Manufacturing Unit Labor Costs tumbled to -6.5% in Q1 2002 in its largest decline since Q2 1961. The White House's Hubbard remarked afterwards that the US Q1 data suggests the productivity gains are permanent.
