Ian, OT *** telemarketers

As soon as I discern it's a tm [usually they mis-pronounce my name] I say "have a good day" and hang up immediately.
I feel smug about being polite and firm then.<G>

OT - I have another approach. I am extremely cordial, find out what the person is selling, then try to quickly think of the reason that totally obliterates any chance that he can make a sale. For instance, if they are selling siding I say that my home is all stone. If it is replacement windows I say that I just put in all new Pella windows this spring. If it is life insurance I say that I have an inoperable heart. (this happens to be true - it is inoperable because I do not permit it).
