in what you term to be "isolated violations."

Where did I use the term "isolated violations"? Nowhere.

...between the curiously and regularly wide spreads...

LOL!!! What size spread is "too wide"?

SEC should have gone after the real culprits!

ROFL - you're the quintessential piker.

I didn't say there weren't culprits among the market making firms, in fact - in the quote you yourself reposted, I said that there were violations, just not street-wide and certainly not conspiratorial.

Instead, I believe that there were (and still are) other, more prominent (not to mention verifiable) risks to investors in 1996: specifically, four or five major retail brokerage chop shops in operation which in some cases continued to defraud individuals for years before finally being shut down.

nice contribution, Count. it is important to spread the awareness of these egregious ethical breaches on threads like this and in other public venues, not in order to instigate the communist revolution <g> but to protect the free market from those who feel free to confuse freedom with license. the defense of free enterprise is in no way dependent on the trivialization of criminal behavior in the securities industry--it is of longstanding, it is widespread and its curtailment is an idea whose time has come.
