<<<There are certain things which are in the common good. It is better for our society that children grow up healthy than unhealthy, so there is a public interest in providing adequate food and medical care for children whose parents cannot or will not provide it.>>

There you go again Chris. Trying to make a perfect society with the government being the mother and father. Individual responsibilty is necessary for a free society.

The following might explain it better:

Karl Popper once said that attempts to create heaven
> on earth invariably produce hell. Libertarianism
> holds out, not the goal of a perfect society, but of a better and freer one. It promises a world in which more of the decisions will be made in the right way by the right person: you. The result will be, not an end to crime and poverty and inequality, but less of most of those things most of the time--often much less.

Regards

...There are things children need to be productive, functioning citizens. If their parents can't or won't provide those, the society must, or it won't be a successful society for very long. ...

What you really mean :

There are things the government must do to insure that children grow up to be unthinking, obedient slaves. No political power elite can hope to survive if parents are allowed to protect their children from enforced indoctrination.
