I'm not trying to make a perfect society. I'm perfectly content for adults to make their own choices and live with the consequences of them. I am not content to leave young children at the mercy of their parents and not providing any protections when the parents fail to provide basic necessities for their children, either from lack of money or from lack of will. Let me get specific. A 14 year old crack-addicted girl becomes pregnant and has a baby. Should society turn its back on that child and say, you get only whatever medical care and education your mother is willing and able to provide you? That's not a healthy society for my children to live in.
