I say that it would be a better society to turn its back if you mean by society-government. Society could mean you or me or the church or friends or family or neighbors or Bill Gates or anyone but government. There is much better control if you give as the government does little more than $crew it up. It would not be perfect but if you had more resources available (meaning your taxes cut more than half) I think everyone would be more charitable. I know I would.
