ESS Technology Reports Record DVD Chip Shipments in April Cites Increased Consumer Demand for Progressive Scan Products FREMONT, Calif., May 13 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- ESS Technology (Nasdaq: ESST - News), a leading provider of silicon solutions for digital video, digital home systems, and home networking solutions announced today that during the month of April, the company shipped over two million units of its advanced DVD decoder solutions to OEMs worldwide, setting a new monthly record for the company. Robert Blair, president and chief executive officer of ESS Technology stated, "We are particularly pleased with ESS's April results as we believe this record level of shipments in the traditionally weak second quarter, on top of record shipments in the March quarter, shows that the DVD market continues to be strong and growing. We are confident that we will meet our guidance of 10 - 20 percent DVD growth this quarter." ESS's record April shipments is in line with a new report published in April by Nikkei Market Access that estimates that about 53 million DVD players will be sold during 2002 due to lower prices and strong demand. This is up significantly from previously published industry surveys estimating 2002 demand to be in the range of 40-42 million units. Patrick Ang, ESS's chief operating officer commented, "During April, our customers reported strong demand from retailers worldwide, with China domestic consumption showing the highest percentage growth. We now believe the China domestic market will grow from 3.5 million units in 2001 to approximately 8 million units in 2002." Mr. Ang continued, "The recent design wins that we have secured worldwide have also resulted in record shipments of our new progressive scan DVD solutions last month. We believe that our progressive scan product shipments will grow from about 50,000 units in the March quarter to over 1.0 million units during the current quarter. We think the progressive scan feature with its higher video quality is going to be the hot item this holiday season, and we are forecasting progressive scan products to grow to over 30 percent of our DVD units during the coming third quarter." Mr. Blair concluded, "ESS continues to be the world's leading supplier of DVD and VCD chips and we believe we now have over 40 percent share of the worldwide DVD market. With the many new products planned for introduction this year such as our new MPEG encoder for digital video recording and our new integrated DVD system-on-a-chip, along with our leading digital video market position, we believe that we will see continued growth during the balance of 2002 and 2003."
