Corvis Launches Customer ONE
Program Will Enhance Revenue Potential for Carriers Through Optically Optimized Solutions
COLUMBIA, Md., May 20 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Corvis Corporation (Nasdaq: CORV - News), a leading provider of intelligent optical networking solutions, today announced its latest initiative in delivering optically optimized solutions-a customer-need driven partner program designed to accelerate service revenue opportunities for carriers.
Through the Customer ONE program, Corvis is expanding the array of optically optimized solutions available to carriers. By combining Corvis' proven portfolio of core optical networking solutions with metro/access systems providers and application software companies chosen by the carrier, Corvis enables customers to quickly expand revenue sources by offering advanced, flexible, next-generation services using end-to-end solutions specifically tailored to the customers business.
"Our customers are under a tremendous amount of pressure to rapidly develop new revenue streams. They simply cannot compete effectively with the 'one size fits all' solutions they are currently being offered," said Kent Novak, Corvis' vice president of strategic marketing. "The Corvis Customer ONE program allows carriers to select the complementary technologies needed to offer new applications and services with the proven advantages of Corvis' transport and switching infrastructure."
Corvis will use the Customer ONE program to extend the benefits of Corvis' optically optimized solutions, which focus on maximizing carrier's revenue opportunities, while minimizing their total cost of ownership, through the metro/access layer to the application layer. The program will allow carriers to increase revenue generation through superior service delivery of wavelength services, optical Ethernet, storage area networking (SAN) and managed multi- vendor network services.
Wavelength Services
According to Pioneer Consulting's March 5, 2002 market and technology assessment report, "Global Wavelength Services: Optical Signaling Development, Business Case Justification and New Revenue Opportunities," worldwide wavelength services revenue will grow from nearly $622 million in 2001 to $6.2 billion in 2006.
To capitalize on these opportunities, Corvis, through its Customer ONE program, is focusing on integrating with the best-in-class application vendor of its carrier customer's choice. This is demonstrated by the integration of a unified control plane signaling schema, jointly developed by Corvis and Movaz Networks, a leading provider of metro optical solutions, to enable dynamic wavelength service provisioning. This enables managed wavelength services to be instantaneously provisioned from the customer premise through the metro core into the ultra long haul all using a single provisioning platform. The advantages of this approach not only results in significantly shortened service turn-up intervals, but also enables service agnostic wavelength transport of any aggregated or transparent interfaces, including broadband data services such as Gigabit Ethernet. Service provider profitability is greatly improved from the "just-in-time" equipment deployments as well as from the control plane enabled dynamic provisioning capabilities.
Optical Ethernet
RHK's March 2002 multi-client study "Opportunities for Gigabit Ethernet" shows growing demand for bandwidth will create a $4-billion revenue opportunity for North American service providers offering optical Ethernet services by 2006.
Corvis' initial Customer ONE offering in this segment is through a partnership with Coriolis Networks. Corvis' solution combines the Corvis ON and Corvis Optical Convergence Switch (OCS) with the Coriolis Networks OptiFlow metro optical access/transport platform. As compared to offering traditional SONET-based services, the combined Corvis and Coriolis Networks solution enables service providers to offer end-to-end Ethernet services with dynamic bandwidth allocation, provides for migration from legacy SONET to Ethernet over SONET, and promotes new services such as VLAN (Virtual LAN), SAN and pay-per-Megabit services.
Storage Area Networking
According to an April 8, 2002 report from Forrester, despite slashed IT budgets and waning interest in new technology, firms are still looking to build out storage area networks (SANs). A survey of IT executives at North American firms reveals that 38 percent of firms have implemented or are implementing a SAN and 42 percent will consider or pilot storage networks in 2002.
The first Corvis Customer ONE offering in this segment is with Coriolis Networks and Nishan to offer end-to-end Fibre Channel storage transport networks for metro and wide area applications. With the growing need for secure offsite data storage and retrieval, there is an increasing demand for these services. Using Coriolis Networks and Nishan products, it is easy to configure and enable point-to-point offsite storage networking services, leveraging the bandwidth flexibility of Ethernet as the transport element for maximum performance and efficiency. By combining those capabilities with the transparent optical switching capabilities of Corvis products, it is also easy to provide multi-site distribution of storage networking and other types of data services over any distance. Now, more than ever before, the ability to move large amounts of data safely, quickly, and accurately is of the utmost importance, and this combined solution enables IT professionals to accomplish this task.
Multi-Vendor NMS
Corvis currently has two Customer ONE partners it is working with to address network management concerns.
Ai Metrix and Corvis have an active network management presently installed and operating in a carriers' network. Ai Metrix provides Fault and Performance information on Broadwing's all-optical switched network. Broadwing has deployed the industry's first intelligent, all-optical switched network, using Corvis' portfolio of optically optimized networking products, including the industry's only all-optical switch. The principal benefit of the system is a real time logical display that provides an intelligent view of any network. By integrating the inventory system into the Fault and Performance system, any physical status changes are correlated to the actual customers traffic that flows across that link, thus providing a logical view of what services will be affected by the physical condition of the network. This customer centric view of the network is unique, and is presently in use today.
"Ai Metrix is excited to be part of the Corvis Customer ONE program," said Mark Wyman, vice president, Product Management for Ai Metrix. "The leading optical technology and forward thinking of the Corvis team blends well with our NeuralStar optical-friendly solutions."
Corvis' partnership with Granite Systems is another example of the Customer ONE program at work. Granite and Corvis work together in order to provide detailed Service Resource Management (SRM) information on installed network assets. This SRM system allows a carrier to accomplish three things. First, it enables the carrier to maximize its installed base by maintaining a self-aware inventory of active and passive installed and planned resources. Second, it provides visibility into those elements that remain open to further expansion, thus allowing a rapid determination of what new provisioning needs to take place to enable services. Finally, this system virtually eliminates stranded network assets, freeing up precious capital to expand or reallocate assets to locations where they can provide the highest benefit to the carrier.
