Fairchild reports stronger-than-expected orders in Q2

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine--Fairchild Semiconductor International Inc. today joined other chip makers in reporting improving conditions in the second quarter. The company's chief executive officer said orders have been better than expected through the first seven weeks of the quarter.

Fairchild's revenues are tracking toward the high end of the company's original guidance of 3-5% sequential growth in Q2 from $336.9 million in the first quarter, said Kirk Pond, chairman and CEO of Fairchild.

"We've continued to see strong demand for our power products and our book-to-bill ratio for the quarter has remained well above 1.1-to-1," Pond said.

"Orders from notebook, wireless handset, and display segments are above first quarter run rates, consumer and industrial demand has stayed steady and desktop PC orders are seasonally slower as expected," he added. "On a regional basis, demand from China and South Korea has continued to lead our other regions. Overall our 26-week backlog has continued to grow and we are now building significant backlog for third quarter delivery as well."

Last month, Fairchild announced it has begun hiring workers for addition production shifts at its wafer fabs in West Jordan, Utah, and Bucheon City, South Korea. "We expect these additional wafer starts to come on line during late second quarter to support continued revenue growth in the third and fourth quarters," Pond said. "In summary, the second quarter is tracking ahead of our expectations, and we are pleased that the recovery we began to see in the third quarter of 2001 continues to build strength."

Fairchild is scheduled to report its second quarter results on July 23.
