Your account of tap dancing is making me laugh as I think back to my own childhood. I remember watching a beautiful girl from my Grade 2 class, performing in a school talent show. She was wearing a pretty soft blue dress and wore bright red patent leather tap shoes. She sang and danced something.. can't remember exactly what now. I was so taken with the performance that I went home that afternoon and bugged my Mom to let me take tap dancing lessons. It never happened, but that may have been for the best. I don't think I would have been much of a performer. Most of my greatest performances were akin to Justin's "tree" role. I think I usually played the 10th or 12th of the dozen baaahhhhing sheep in the annual Christmas pageant. But I played my part well. I could baaaaahhh right up there with the best of them!

I wonder if they still sing it in schools

I can imagine that the kids' reaction would be, "Like, what is courtin'?"

my mother gave me a home perm

In keeping with the theatrical theme of the moment, I trust it was a Tony? (Or was it Toni?) I can still faintly recall the aroma of that product. I had an aunt who was a "beauty operator" who did the "home permanent" thing on my grandmother and cousins.

At about the time of your fateful dance recital, I managed to get thru my first and last piano recital on a Sunday afternoon at the Episcopal church, playing a stirring rendition of "Barnyard Frolics". I'm sure the attendees could virtually see, and especially smell, the cows and goats and chickens.

Oh, my god, tap dancing. Did we grow up in the same era?

I still remember taking tap lessons, and then the performance where I had to appear in a white satin suit my mother had made. I was probably six at the time??
