Beauty can pierce one like a pain.
Thomas Mann

Your Canadian roses sound large and scary. Like the ones around Sleeping Beauty's castle keeping out the world.

Our roses are wimpy and civilized. They know their place, and wouldn't dream of attacking us. Sometimes they pat us gently as we walk by and try to kiss us.
The thorns wear little mittens.

WOnderful post, croc. Even with no goats.

(I was just kidding about the mittens.)

That was wonderful!

Earlier this year I tried to prune back a blackberry/bramble combination thicket we have.

It prepared me totally to relate to your experience.

I've got a 10' long clipper that my grandmother had. You can stand way back and cut with it. Newer, fancier version-
