Exactly right.

First, the law itself accepts a man's word as proof of his innocence, while the woman must find four male Muslim witnesses to prove his guilt. That is not mere "bias in the application of the law." That is bias in the law.

Fits with my reading as well. And your argument for the general character fits as well, though my guess is a serious investigation would find some fairly wide ranging differences. Don't know for certain.

Many Muslim feminists point out that the Islam was originally a progressive force for women.

I've seen that argument, heard talks in which it was made. One of these days I'll spend some time getting up to speed on it. It sounds much like similar arguments in Protestant theology--early egalitarian theology gets taken over by a patriarchal society. Would be interesting to see the comparisons.

Nadine, I am afraid you are not correct in your reading of the Law. I went back to the Quranic verses (Sura 24, versus 6-9) and it says ""And for those who launch a charge against their wives and have no evidence but their own, Let him testify four times By Allah that he is speaking the truth. And the fifth (oath) that he invokes the curse of Allah on him if he was telling a lie. But, the punishment of the wife is averted if she testified four times (with an oath) that he is telling a lie. And the fifth (oath) that she invokes the curse of Allah on her if he was telling the truth".
Again, Read the source; not the interpretation.
