"I'm told there is a way of doing the transfer using XP and a data cable between the 2 computers. Is anyone familiar with this?"

winxp has a files and settings transfer wizard, which makes use of DCC, or direct cable connection.

i have not used it. i have read that it does a somewhat incomplete job.

to learn more, and to access the wizard in xp, go to

start \ programs \ accessories \ system tools \ files & settings transfer wizard

this dialog will also display a hyperlink for connecting your computers.

hope this helps

:)

It is a good idea NOT to use third party "smart" application relocators. Moving an application is a very tricky process. It never comes as any surprise to me when I hear about people whose system was messed up and had to be completely reinstalled when a tool like this was used by them. I had a freind who recently tried this approach. After the relocation of a complete system from an old PC, his system failed and simply would not work. There ended up being very serious problems. I had to reinstall Windows and all of his applications to give him a working system.

There is rarely any "magic pill" with computers. When something claims to be that "magic pill", it pays to check it out, and when in doubt, not use it.

I hope this helps.

as an addendum to my prior post to you regarding winxp files and settings transfer wizard...

i see that there is a download available via windows update that fixes some of the issues i alluded to. if you elect to try using this wizard, be sure to avail yourself of this fix.

Files and Settings Transfer Wizard
Download size: 794 KB, 5 minutes
This update resolves the "Files and Settings Are Not Transferred When You Use the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard" issue in the User Migration Tool, and is discussed in Microsoft Knowledge Base (KB) Article Q307869. The tool might not migrate some settings correctly. This update fixes the migration of cookies and some Outlook Express settings. Download now to correct this problem before migrating data.

read the kb article here:
support.microsoft.com

i call your attention to this microsoft note contained in the kb article...

"A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem described in this article and should be applied only to systems experiencing this specific problem. This fix may receive additional testing at a later time, to further ensure product quality. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Windows XP service pack that contains this fix."

good luck

:)
