as far as defrag goes, you probably need to (i) turn off your screen saver and (ii) set your power management options (all 3 of them) to "never". you reach these options through the control panel.

part of your problem is that defrag never finishes because your computer senses activity. so it restarts again.

not sure about scandisk. never had that problem, but it wouldn't hurt to try the above suggestions before running scandisk as well.

it has also been recommended to me that you can try running defrag in safe mode. but i know a very savvy technician who can't run defrag at all, even in safe mode.

My mother's computer has the same problem. Running it in save mode allows the defrag but the computer is still hosed.

I think it's has a virus since I keep getting virus e-mails from her.
