Driver problems can also look like a virus in how it can hose up the system.

I tried software salesperson's suggestion to no avail (thanks for the suggestion though, s.s.). The degrag and scandisk worked with the old settings before. The error message says something about Windows writing to the hard drive, I think. Weird.

Someone told me I first started getting funny email that they got something from me with a certain attachment that I hadn't sent...so it must be a virus but the anti-virus stuff I've got isn't doing the trick. I guess I can live with things the way they are without purging the hard drive and starting from scratch.
