AMSTERDAM, May 22 (Reuters) - President Jacques Chirac's suggestion that France might postpone a deadline for eliminating its public deficit strains the credibility of Europe's budgetary policy, the head of the Dutch central bank said.

Nout Wellink said that if there was a knock-on effect in the form of a boost to prices in the 12-nation euro zone, the European Central Bank would have to react -- a clear hint that interest rates might be raised.
