Re: If Intel does not include x86-64 in Prescott (which at this point seems like a very long shot), it is a good news for Hammer. Banias will most likely not be 64 bit. I don't know what's next on Intel's roadmap which could include x86-64, but it now looks that AMD will have at least 1 to 2 year lead in x86-64, or some 50 million units.

It seemed as though Intel would never again do anything as stupid and self-destructive as ride Rambus bandwagon down the toilet and all the way out to the sewer in the street.

But now they seem to be determined to trump that particular screwup with the "miracle" (for AMD!) of IA-64.

Intel is an amazing company...

How may buyers will be willing to settle for less than a 64-bit processor in a mid-range to high-end machine by the end of next year?

I agree with your assessment that no x86-64 (or Intel substitute) in Prescott is good news for AMD. The rest of Prescott, especially 0.09µ may be on track for mid 2003, but Intel couldn't get x86-64 ready on time for that. I think it's way to late for Intel to come up with its own x86-64 and expect to have any software support a year from now.

So I don't see any version of x86-64 available from Intel until 2004, probably first for Xeon Prescott and later for desktop.

OTOH, I expect a 0.09µ Prescott will close that gap in performance on 32 bit applications vs. the Hammer desktops if it's truly ready by mid '03.
