It looks like I may have to do another clean reinstall of WinXP. Searching on the Internet, I find that there is usually no problem changing between similar chipset motherboards, like Intel to Intel, or VIA to VIA. But there are problems going from Intel to VIA or VIA to Intel chipset based boards. I think this is because the hardware abstraction layer (HAL) of WinXP is different between a VIA and an Intel board. Microsoft warns of this situation in a knowledge base articel. But I did not expect this to cause a video card to burn out. Or perhaps it was a defective video card? Worst case I have enountered is the system will just not boot.

So both the video card problem and the poor performance of the disk drive possibly can relate to driver types of issues that may be resolved with a clean install of WinXP. I hope my video card problem does not turn out to be a defective motherboard!

When will this journey end? :-)
