Re: "First Silicon" is well understood to mean the first version of the full design.

You know, the stuff Intel ships to endusers, like the 1.13GHZ PIII and Itanium:

Remember this little gem from 6 months ago?
Intel's Itanium processor is failing to pass Compaq Computer's stress tests, according to a Compaq representative, thus holding up the release of Compaq's Itanium servers....

Originally due in the mid- to late 90s, the chip only came out commercially in May 2001. Partly because of the delays and partly because of performance, most server manufacturers have barely marketed servers containing the first version of the chip and are concentrating on the next version, code-named McKinley, which comes out next year.

Some computer executives have become increasingly critical of the chip. Because the chip is based on an entirely new design, very little software exists today that runs on the server--a situation exacerbated by the harsh economic climate.

Customer interest for Itanium servers is "effectively zero," Joe Marengi, senior vice president and general manager, Dell Americas, said in an interview Tuesday at the Comdex Fall 2001 trade show. "The investment involved in the transition in huge.

Re <<Oh yes there is. First silicon is the first silicon of the full design. >>

Oh I know that, but that does not say much. It says nothing about how it should work. While developing the process, AMD did 0.13 SOI silcon well before anyone thinks. But there was no expectation as to it working.

Elmer,

Re: " ... but the term "First Silicon" is well understood to mean the first version
of the full design."

YES, this is CORRECT when applied to a specific design (like, say DasHumper).
AMD also would have a process development vehicle like an SRAM along
with device reliability physics structures. Then as you point out Elmer, there
is a very good likelihood that there were also additional test chips to
qualify IP and perhaps for package qualification.

Make It So,
