John- you make some very valid points, the two I agree with most are re: voice recognition, surely if one can talk an email or website into a 1X phone rather then punching it out one key stroke at a time it will stimulate huge growth in the usage of the cell phone other than just for voice.

The other point I couldn't agree more with and am waiting anxiously to see if VZ and Sprint get it right:
Clearly, if 1X generates a good user experience, then it is only a matter of reducing price to the point that customers exit Cingular, AT&T and Voice Stream because they are unable to offer an equivalent competatively priced service.

One concern I have is will the profit squeeze prevent them from lowering the price enough to hurt the competition?

I think you meant to say speech recognition.

Speech recognition would be the capability of your phone to recognize your speech, or your wife's speech, or the speech of almost anyone (all one language) for voiced commands, dictation, etc.

Voice recognition is the capability to distinguish one voice from others . For example, your phone might activate upon a voice command from you .. but no one else .. not even those with similar sounding voices.

The press is not very helpful in teaching the public this distinction. I recently saw a news report where the author used voice recognition many times .. even though the company's PR used the speech recognition term properly.
