Great write up Art. I really enjoyed it and found it very helpful in considering both long term opportunities as well as short term valuation considerations. My only question while reading was the following comment

(That's a lot cheaper than what Verizon intends to charge for its 14.4 kbps service just starting this year.)

Don't you mean "what Verizon "charged" for its 14.4 kbps service as recently as the start of this year??

re: A.S.B. (whoops) ...

Sorry Art, in my first read I missed the signature, so my question about the author has been answered.

The rest of my question remains.

Based on your many recent posts criticizing analysts who fail to see the splendiferous & marvelous & wonderful & earth shattering fundamentals of QUALCOMM I would like to ask you if you consider the function of any analyst to be to pump a stock based on their fundamentals instead of considering track records as it relates to top and bottom line growth, real earnings, strategic investment acumen, and the forecasting integrity of their management.

I have enjoyed your posts in the past but of late your posts are eerily reminiscent of the posts of Reverend Dalglish & Corpgold.

Personally, I find that rather scary, and I have absolutely no hesitation in stating that.

Art, very good summary of the meeting and really appreciated. The market always punishes the good with the bad providing great buying opportunities if you can pick out the long term winners (not always an easy task). I can't think of any tech stock with a stronger long term growth position than Qualcomm.

some two dozen companies are at risk of insolvency. These include JDS UNIPHASE, NORTEL, COVAD COMMUNICATIONS, XO COMMUNICATIONS, SYCAMORE NETWORKS, FOCAL COMMUNICATIONS, ALLEGIANCE TELECOM, NEXTEL, LEVEL 3, CORNING, TIME WARNER TELECOM, PAC-WEST TELECOM, BROADWING, WORLDCOM, QWEST, CITIZENS COMMUNICATIONS, CIENA, SPRINT, LUCENT, AT&T WIRELESS, RIVERSTONE, JUNIPER, AT&T, and CENTURY TEL.

Wow! What's JDSU (with $1.5B cash and no debt) doing on that list? And SCMR and CIEN have over $1B cash each - their risk of bankruptcy is virtually zero. RSTN is operating at break even levels with $480m cash versus about $260m debt - also zero bankruptcy risk.

I think XOXO is already bankrupt, so the author sure has lumped some cash rich companies in with some debt laden messes.

A video prepared by Bell Mobility of Canada assured shareholders and investment analysts that a 10 percent investment in upgrading their facilities would increase total capacity by 70 percent (i.e., going from the current CDMA system to the third generation enhanced voice and data optimized).

Thanks for your post. It helped prompt me to listen to the entire analyst meeting.

But "70 percent"? Has Qualcomm officially back-peddled on their "doubling" of voice capacity when switching from cdmaOne to 1x? Or is it just recognition that ALL the cdmaOne phones will not be replaced by 1x phones for some time? Like maybe one gets 70% of the benefit when 50% of the phones are 1x?

When and where did you first hear this 70% number?

Also, I don't think Bell Mobility was making any reference to EV or DO. The 70% (or 70% to 100%) increase in voice capacity is from their change from cdmaOne to 1x. And that's without any antenna diversity (maybe SMV too) benefits.
