People here tend to confuse civility with friendship, and I've no idea why

I think it's mostly just the semantics of "friend" or "friendship."

Kind of like how we (the U.S.) might consider Syria a friend one week but not the next.

Perhaps using "friend" as an alternate to "ally."

I think that while some of us may use "friend" somewhat casually or even inappropriately, we all (the sane among us, that is) do realize that it would be a rare thing indeed to form a true friendship just by interacting with someone anonymously over the Net.
